Fandom: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Name: Ugetsu Asari
Canon Point: Pre-canon, before Giotto retires to Japan
History: Ugetsu's Wiki
Personality: Ugetsu comes across as being very pleasant and jovial to just about everyone he meets. He's polite, gracious, and overall is very easy to get along with. He dislikes conflict, and it is in his very nature to try and calm it without resorting to violence, which is, in part, what makes him a prime example of a rain guardian as his flames have a similar effect on attacks. Ugetsu also very lax and not one to be too hard on people, always willing to give the benefit of the doubt and a second chance. He is not a complete pushover though, and he will put his foot down after giving an individual that second chance.
Ugetsu also has a very interesting quirk, and perhaps a little rigidity regarding his culture. The clothes he wears can either be linked to the Heian era of Japan (which ended sometime during the late Roman empire) or a costume from the Noh theater, which given the time setting for the rest of the first Vongola's generation is far more likely. Regardless, it is rather odd that despite having relocated to Italy for a number of years, he continues to wear his stage costume as casual attire (and given the Italian weather, that many layers of clothing must be hot). Thus, despite seeming like the most normal of the first Vongola's guardians, he's a bit of a fruit-loop himself and doesn't give much regard to social norms. Perhaps also hinting at a bit of homesickness, and stubborn clinging to his culture despite practicality.
Despite mostly being the afore-mentioned easygoing yet slightly eccentric oddball, Ugetsu is also very adept at assassination. He's very perceptive, and will often maintain the 'easygoing fluffy musician' act while preparing to go on the offensive. He's got a quick wit, and while he honestly prefers to keep things lighthearted and relaxed, he often will overplay it to make himself seem like less of a threat than he is. Improvisation and surprise are his greatest weapons, and on the rare chance someone pushes him enough to bare his fangs, he will not hesitate to kill. Ugetsu is plain and simply naturally gifted at killing, and this stark contrast between how he presents himself and what he is capable of makes him a fearsome individual. That said, murder is not his passion in the least. He adores his flute and music, and given the choice would rather live contently and peacefully off of that than by his blades.
Ugetsu is also prone to acts of selflessness. In order to help his friend in Italy, he sold his beloved instruments to purchase his swords and to take care of travel expenses in order to provide aide (though it is assumed he purchased a new flute at some point as he's usually seen with it). This also can manifest in a bit of a mother-hen like need to care or provide for others, or at least protect them. He is shown being somewhat indulgent to the youngest of their group, Lampo, doing his best to calm the short-tempered storm guardian, G, from beating on Lampo for his laziness and attitude.
Skills | Powers: Ugetsu's weapons of choice are four irregular swords- one long blade and three short swords, which he has displayed great skill with. He can also channel 'rain flames' into his weapons, which gives his attack the added bonus of slowing down and/or weakening an opponent and their attacks.
As far as actual techniques go, Ugetsu is known to simply make them up on the spot. Improvisation is his best weapon. However, despite this being past his canon point, here are a few moves he made up in thegod awful filler arc, as he may just make them up again.
Hisame: An attack where Ugetsu rains down a barrage of "hardened rain flames" (read: icicles) towards his opponent.
Kuzuryu riverfall: A large wave of rain flames that take the shape of a nine-headed dragon. This technique deliberately leaves his back open momentarily.
Torrential Dance: Ugetsu creates a torrent of rain flames to make 'copies' of himself through the reflection. His successor, Yamamoto, is seen doing something similar with regular water as well, so it could be assumed that Ugetsu can as well. These clones, however, do nothing other than serve as a tool for misdirection. They cannot attack.
On the non-weapon front, Ugetsu is a very prominent flutist, using what appears to be a nohkan, a wooden flute used for noh theater performances. Thus, judging by his clothes and instrument he was a performer at some point in time.
He is also quite observant and perceptive, yet maintains his lighthearted, easy-going disposition often allowing himself appear slightly clueless or dense, as mentioned earlier.
First Person Sample:
[The feed comes on rather abruptly, and upside down, on a very perplexed Japanese man inquisitively poking at the foreign device in his hands. Anyone aware of the culture (or samurai movies) may pick up on the rather outdated attire.]
..A mirror? How curious.
[After a few more taps he loses interest in the device in favor of taking in his new surroundings, and he holds the device close to his chest causing it to go dark. If it was given to him it certainly had some sort of significance. Slight rustling can be heard as he walks along the road, his free hand casually tucked within his sleeve near his concealed short swords, remaining as quiet as possible...
..aside from the little talking to himself on a broadcasted feed thing.]
Third Person Sample: Despite the overall unpleasantness of what he had learned would be his residence for a time, Ugetsu was determined to make the best of it. The slight hint of turned earth was reminiscent of the farms during the spring while seeds were sewn. He chose to focus on that rather than the claustrophobic and still air and erratic day hours. The one thing he found to be hard to do without was the rain. There was something appealing about the almost rhythmic sound of rain pattering against the roof, and the fresh smell of the air the following day. He supposed it was rather fitting for a rain guardian to be so fond of to the corresponding weather.
He stepped out from under the overhang of the humble little house he had claimed on the outskirts or the residential area (not to be antisocial to neighbors of course, but he did enjoy his quiet and peaceful solitude to gather his thoughts) and looked up to the strange sky. 'Evening' was approaching. He walked a little further to a treestump and took a seat, pulling out his flute. He brought the humble wooden instrument to his lips and began to play, the notes resonating through the air. There was no crowd to play for, no one to hear the steady, expertly played notes aside from himself, and possibly the gods who crafted this place. Which was all fine by him. He felt the music kept him grounded, even under such duress.
When he finished he brought the flute away from his lips and set it on his lap, and again looked up towards the 'sky', only this time with a smile. If there were indeed gods here, he sincerely wished they had heard. He was a man with little material things to offer aside from his music and blade. Perhaps this would at least bode in his world's favor.
"I hope you enjoyed my performance."
And just as he was about to get up and retire to his house for the evening, he felt a little wet droplet on the tip of his nose. After a few surprised blinks, his smile brightened. Surely it could easily be passed of as a mild coincidence, but Ugetsu preferred to see it as an acknowledgment from the deities. He would hold strong until his trial here was over.
